Alethia H. Cook has been involved in defense consulting for over 20 years, beginning in 1990 when she joined Foresight International in Akron, Ohio. Her work at that firm focused on defense-related technologies and markets. The firm’s most significant product line was a series of reports that estimated the economic and employment impacts of the sale of weapons systems for companies such as General Dynamics Land Systems, Boeing, and Raytheon. While at Foresight she researched the present and future of various security-related technologies, as well as the threat of nuclear and radiological terrorism and US responses to it.
Dr. Cook recently started her own defense consulting firm, Defense Technology Market Analysts, LLC (DeTMA). The firm has completed an evaluation for Celtiq, LLC, of a Defense Department program devoted to stimulating research on corrosion prevention and abatement in military equipment and facilities.
Dr. Cook earned her Ph.D. in Public Policy at Kent State University. She is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Security Studies program at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.
Her current research interests include the unique challenges posed by different categories of weapons of mass destruction; terrorism; pandemic disease threats, planning and response; civil conflict dynamics and the factors that influence them; emergency response to catastrophic disasters; technology and security; and other homeland and international security issues.
